SEED WHOLESALE GRANT MOZAMBIQUE
EUNITE has been a co-founder and co-owner of an agricultural investment in Mozambique: a seed wholesale company called Sunsmile. Sunsmile was established in 2002 via an investment grant of the Dutch authorities and has been operational ever since.
AGRICULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES & GRANT MOZAMBIQUE
Together with other investors, EUNITE has seen the agricultural opportunities in Mozambique for many years. Taken the high risk profile of greenfield investments, in 2001 an agri investment grant for Mozambique was requested and acquired from the Dutch authorities for establishing a seed wholesale company. The remaining funding has been contributed by all shareholders, amongst other EUNITE itself.
LOCAL MANAGEMENT & LOCAL BUSINESS
One of the Dutch shareholders has been managing the company called Sunsmile locally from the very beginning. All seed wholesale business activities have been consisting of local business only from the beginning, meaning buying produces from small local farmers and supplying these to other parts of the value chain, such as the Mozambican food processing industry and local retail stores.
These business activities consist of trading and processing of seeds, herbs, nuts etc. such as piri – piri, sesame and cashew nuts.
CO-INVESTOR & BOARD MEMBER
EUNITE has played an active role in Sunsmile. Next to adding our value in funding / granting Sunsmile, we have co-invested ourselves as shareholders. In addition EUNITE has been an active board member and supporting the local Mozambican management remotely on various operational issues. In 2012 Sunsmile was rented out to a large food processing company and still exists.
The success of this seed wholesale company in Mozambique was the accelerator for other investments in Mozambique. In addition our own efforts in starting up business activities also revealed the potential of local business services in Mozambique for foreign investors. As a result Sunsmile also contributed to the establishment of our local Mozambican company, EUNITE Mozambique.
